What most people don’t understand is that ants eat off of two very distinct eating patterns. In some cases, the ant nest needs protein. In others, they need carbohydrates. Ants need protein primarily for growth, reproduction, and colony maintenance. Ants need carbohydrates as a source of energy — especially for the adult worker ants that are constantly on the move. Depending on what the nest is calling for, the baits used to attract them are very different. In addition, ants can understand when other insects are impacted by certain products. Products used to prevent spiders and wasps will kill ants if sprayed directly, but do little to get rid of the source.
There are several things to keep in mind when treating for ants:
- Don’t use products that are going to kill them right away. Use a product that is slow to kill them. It will give them time to bring it back to the nest.
- Ants will avoid areas where other ants or insects have died. Using baits and sprays that will kill them instantly do little to eliminate the source.
- Ants share food with the nest. Anything that they eat – the nest eats.
- Use both a protein and a carbohydrate bait at the same time. Few consumer-based baits contain both.
- Some infestations are large. They didn’t appear overnight – they are not going to disappear overnight. Patience is key.
- In most cases, it is cost effective to call the right professional pest control expert instead of treating on your own. They have access to more effective products and can resolve the issue much faster.
